A message to my almost 2 month old son…
I sit in this old rocking chair with you, my son, bundled up in a blanket on my lap with my arm wrapped around you.
It’s dark in your nursery, but by the moonlight beyond the clouds there is some natural light coming through your windows.
I look down to see your eyes wide open like you don’t want to miss a moment, but what you are still learning, dear child, is that most of the action occurs during daylight hours which at this point in your life you’re still sleeping a lot during.
The only noises that can be heard from this spot are white noise, your dad finally getting some rest, and slight creaks from this old rocking chair as it slowly moves back and forth.
Oh how glad I am to have been gifted this old rocking chair.
You see, sweet boy, this old rocking chair has many memories attached. Your Papa had it sent to the United States from another country when he was in the military far from home and your Uncle was about to be born.
Your Grandma rocked your Uncle, Aunt, and eventually, your Daddy in this same rocking chair. It’s been in the family for a little over 50 years! My excitement over this particular piece of furniture sitting in one corner of your room may seem silly, but to me, it is an honor to be trusted to pass on the tradition to my own children of rocking you and putting you at ease.
This old rocking chair represents a legacy… a legacy of a hard working, loving man who would do whatever it took to take care of his family’s needs. A good father who helped raise the man who is raising you alongside myself, of course!
Your Daddy is similar in that aspect! He will do whatever it takes to get you what you need! He will love you with all he has, protect you in all capacities, and pray for your heart to be overflowing with the love of God!
There’s no love like that of a mother or a father, but truly, the most unconditional, unrelenting, unchanging love comes from your Heavenly Father who made the ultimate sacrifice for you and me!
This old rocking chair has been faithful to survive in this family for half a century! The wood might not be as shiny anymore, there may be squeaks when in motion, and you might not always appreciate being rocked like this. Nevertheless, the chair remains, waiting to do what it is meant to do: bring comfort and rest to a Wade child!
I thank God for you! I thank God for our family! AND I thank God for his loving forgiveness and abundance of grace in our lives! Because unlike the chair, God never grows weak or weary! He’s standing firm and ready to hear from you and to spend time with you so you may know his voice and presence all the more!
So this old rocking chair has a purpose and I only pray that our time spent in it hearing and singing songs of worship and my speaking Truth over your life make an impact that you’ll look back on and say, “I remember when God showed up in my room and he felt so close I could reach out and touch his loving hand! I never want to let him go!” That’s the dream! I pray sweet dreams over you tonight little one as you fall asleep in my arms and one day find true rest in the arms of God spread open wide for you to run right into! He’s waiting!
